September 4, 1882 – Thomas Edison energized the Pearl Street Station

The Pearl Street station was the first commercial electrical power plant. It lit up a square mile of Lower Manhattan. Pearl Street Station was also the world’s first cogeneration plant. The steam engines powered the electricity. Then Edison distributed the steam by-product to warm nearby buildings on the same Manhattan block. How would you use a cogeneration plant today?
